The year 2021 in Poland was marked by a pandemic, but it doesn\u2019t mean we had stagnation in the world of cider. A lot happened and we can see signs of recovery. Have a look at our 2021 recap &#8211; part 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Debuts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a very successful cider release by <a href=\"https:\/\/zywer.pl\/en\/strona-glowna-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cydrownia Zywer<\/a> &#8211; a cider mill founded by Tomasz Zywer in the Podkarpackie area (south-east Poland).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summertime, two new cider appeared: dry <em>Brus<\/em> 2020 and slightly lighter <em>Foszt<\/em> 2020. Both made from an old apple varieties such as Groch\u00f3wka, Reneta, Boskoop, Bancroft. It is worth mentioning that cider<em> Brus<\/em> was awarded in the SISGA competition in Spain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/zywer_sisga.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-625\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/zywer_sisga.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/zywer_sisga-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/zywer_sisga-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>\u00a9Cydrownia Zywer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of work was done by Maciej W\u0142odarczyk, the owner and head cider maker in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eko-farma.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Eko Farma<\/a> in Szczyrzyc. His Cider Frys (dry, medium-dry and sweet cider) will be released in summer 2022.&nbsp;Maciej&#8217;s ciders are organic and made on-farm with minimal intervention. Eko Farma is preparing now for its official debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AWARDS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most spectacular success was an award for cider mill <a href=\"http:\/\/cydrchyliczki.pl\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cydr Chyliczki<\/a>. International Wine &amp; Spirit Competition (IWSC) awarded Gold for <em>Lodowa Beczka <\/em>(ice cider), Silver for <em>Kronselka<\/em> (single variety) and Brown for <em>Czarny Sad<\/em> (flavoured cider). The success was even mentioned by Forbes (!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"365\" height=\"801\" src=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/chyliczki_forbes.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-623\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/chyliczki_forbes.jpg 365w, http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/chyliczki_forbes-137x300.jpg 137w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><figcaption>Cydr Chyliczki in Forbes!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lodowa Beczka<\/em><strong> <\/strong>is made of Rubin apple variety, by the method of very slow fermentation (for 12 months) and then matured in Hungarian oak barrels for  24 months. Incredibly concentrated, with notes of baked and dried apples, raisins, honey, and vanilla aromas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SISGA Asturies (Spain)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SISGA is an annual cider competition that takes place in the northern Spanish province of Asturies. We went to Asturies in 2019 to take part in meetings, tasting and the competition itself (Rita was a judge). You can read more here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year a total of 73 cider mills with more than 230 ciders from countries such as the United States, France, Portugal, Germany, Chile, the Czech Republic, and Norway, participated among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poland won two awards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Category: Dry still cider &#8211; a Bronze for <a href=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/index.php\/2019\/11\/21\/a-story-of-cider-cydr-tradycyjny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Henryk Nowakowski<\/a> and his <em>Cydr Rubinowy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Category: Brut sparkling cider &#8211; a Gold for Tomasz Zywer and his cider <em>Brus 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pomona<\/strong> <strong>Cider Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pomona Cider Competition is dedicated to amateur cidermakers who still learn how to make craft cider. Since 2017 every year a panel of judges chooses the best ciders made at home. More about the 2021 edition you can read <a href=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/27\/and-the-winner-is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"260\" src=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pomona-konkurs.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-599\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pomona-konkurs.jpeg 500w, http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pomona-konkurs-300x156.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summer picnics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After easing pandemic restrictions in summer, many tourists began to look for more opportunities to visit local farms, cider mills or restaurants. The producers opened the doors and invited people to wander around the orchard and have a picnic. Cider Ignac\u00f3w was the first producer who opened its doors in 2019 &#8211; the small event attracted a handful of the most loyal fans, but in July 2021 the attendance record was broken. The event had a much more extensive character &#8211; commented tasting sessions and food pairing provided by Restauracja \u0179r\u00f3d\u0142o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/24\/cydrownia-przy-sadzie-a-new-cider-is-born\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cydrowia przy Sadzie<\/a>, run by Iwona Rybacka, also organized some picnics and now she runs dancing, creative writing and yoga sessions in the orchard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cider Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polish Craft Ciders Conference was brought back to life by <a href=\"http:\/\/ciderfrompoland.com\/index.php\/2018\/07\/27\/cydr-pelnia-full-moon-cider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Przemek Iwanek<\/a>, who organized its first edition in 2019. After a pandemic broke, the conference was run online but its third edition in October took place in the city of Pozna\u0144 thanks to a new partner &#8211; SPOT restaurant. Cider tastings, talks and food pairing attracted many attendees who had an opportunity to try craft ciders along with the meal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jab\u0142onki<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is worth mentioning <em><a href=\"https:\/\/jablonki.com\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jab\u0142onki<\/a><\/em> (The Apple Trees), a new marketing project run by the State of Poland Foundation to promote Polish apples. It aims to raise awareness about Polish apples amongst Poles. An annual festival of <em>Jab\u0142onki<\/em> with music performances, food and art exhibitions set off in September 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, a lot was happening during 2021.
